Nichols led a Strategic Task Force to rescue the Jubilee Line Extension project when it found itself in crisis. Our work and expertise ensured the project was delivered on time and operated successfully throughout the Millennium celebrations and beyond.
Challenge
As the celebrations for the Millennium approached, there was a significant risk that the Jubilee Line Extension would not be operational in time to provide reliable transport links to the focus of the celebrations, the Millennium Dome on the Greenwich Peninsula. Failure to complete the project would have led to international humiliation for London.
Experience
When issues with the completion of the Jubilee Line Extension project came to the attention of London Underground’s Board, Nichols were asked to set up a Strategic Task Force to take corporate responsibility for planning the completion of the project before the Millennium deadline.
We mobilised a team of experienced professionals who quickly undertook a review of scope to reduce risk, and generated an overall programme for completion. We implemented the technical management of the new signalling system and provided assistance to the new operator during mobilisation.
Significant organisational changes were required. The Strategic Task Force introduced a team to implement the transformational change plan for completion. Members of the Task Force worked in key roles, ensuring continuity of knowledge and experience. In particular, Nichols strategically led the delivery and commissioning of the signalling system.
Benefits
The project came into operation before the Millennium deadline and performed well during the celebrations. The risk of international humiliation had been successfully adverted.
